How to Make Your Propane Delivery a Breeze (for You and the Driver!)

How to Make Your Propane Delivery a Breeze (for You and the Driver!)

Propane delivery isn't just about a truck showing up and filling a tank. It's about safety, efficiency, and a good relationship with your supplier. By taking a few simple steps, you can ensure a smooth delivery every time.

1. Communicate with Your Supplier (Especially About Pets!)

This is the most critical step for everyone's safety.

  • Notify them about pets: Call your propane company directly to inform them of any pets on your property that may be territorial or protective. Request that a permanent "special instructions" note be added to your account.
  • Provide details: Be specific about the type and number of pets you have. This gives the driver a clear understanding of the potential risk.
  • Know their protocol: Ask your supplier what their procedure is for properties with pets. Will they call you before the delivery? Do they have a notification system? Knowing their process will help you prepare.
  • Be proactive: On the day of a scheduled delivery, make sure all pets are safely secured indoors or in a fenced area away from the delivery path. This protects both the driver and your animals.

2. Ensure Clear and Safe Access

Propane trucks are large and require room to maneuver.

  • Clear the path: The truck itself needs ample space. Keep your driveway free of parked cars, toys, and trash cans. The driver also needs a clear path to walk to the tank. Maintain a path at least 18 inches to 4 feet wide, free of overgrown bushes, branches, and debris.
  • Prepare for winter: In snowy or icy conditions, you are responsible for clearing your driveway and the path to the tank. Shovel snow and apply salt or sand. Delivery drivers are not equipped to do this for you.
  • Unlock gates: If your tank is behind a fence or gate, ensure it is unlocked on the day of delivery. If you have a code, share it with the company beforehand.
  • Increase visibility: If your tank is difficult to see from the road (e.g., in a wooded area, behind landscaping, or covered by snow), use a bright flag or marker to help the driver locate it quickly.

3. Maintain Your Propane System

A little maintenance goes a long way.

  • Monitor your tank level: Avoid letting your tank run completely empty. If it does, a costly and time-consuming safety inspection is required before it can be refilled. It's best to call for a delivery when your tank gauge is between 25% and 30%.
  • Keep the area around the tank clear: Ensure the area around the tank is free of flammable materials like leaves, debris, and firewood.
  • Call before you dig: If you have an underground tank, always call 811 before digging to prevent damage to utility lines.

By following these simple guidelines, you can ensure a safe and efficient delivery, protect your pets, and keep your home warm and running smoothly.
